Treppenwitz

Treppenwitz is a word you might find in your (German) dictionary. It refers to that time, the time when you think of the perfect retort/comeback too late.

Unfortunately ...

... that's not really true. As a German journalist I am bound to play the "Spielverderber" (the one who ruins the game ;). "Treppenwitz" is nearly almost used in this context: "Ein Treppenwitz der Geschichte" (a "treppenwitz" of history). The meaning is, that something unusual or laughable happened in history, for example "the fact that the girlfriend and later, for a very short time, the wife of A. Hitler had the last name "Braun" (brown) is a "Treppenwitz der Geschichte", because the Nazis wore always brown uniforms and were known as "brown shirts".

so now when I dont know what to say to something, i can just say, "awww, treppenwitz!"
