Most Common English Nouns That Start With B

Bolt: a countable noun used to define a piece of metal object that is screwed into an object. A bolt is what you use to fasten things together.

But not only that, but a bolt is also a metal bar that can be installed on a floor to keep one’s home safer. The bolt slides across when opening or closing the door/window.

For example: “She heard the sound of a bolt on the door slowly sliding open.”

Breakup: a countable noun describing an end of a relationship or marriage. However, a breakup can happen between business partners, inside an organization, or a group that decides they no longer want to collaborate.

For example: “They both agreed the breakup was the healthiest thing to do.”

Additionally, you can also break up a state to divide it into different parts or regions.

Bridge: a countable noun used to define an arch built over a road, water, or train tracks for vehicles to cross. For example, a bridge can be an aqueduct, a viaduct, or an overpass.

However, a bridge can also refer to a connection or a bond between individuals or groups of people to connect them. For example: “They decided to sacrifice themselves and act as a bridge to a peaceful solution.”

Bully: a countable noun used to describe an oppressing person who operates by hurting or making them feel terrified. The noun bully is typically used for school children who torment other kids.

However, the term is not reserved for youngsters in schools. In fact, this noun is used to define anyone who is a persecutor of terror or violence.

For example: “The first person I met at my new job was the department’s bully.”

Barkeeper is a countable noun used to define a person serving drinks but exclusively behind a bar. For example: “He whispered to the barkeeper to fix him another strong drink.”

Bullet: a countable noun used to define a metal ball shot out of a gun. For example: “The police found the bullets in the trash.”

But besides firing bullets from a gun, you can also “bite the bullet.” The latter is a phrase used to describe an unpleasant but important decision one hesitates with.

For example: “She waited for someone to speak the truth, but finally decided to bite the bullet and tell it like it is.”

Bonus: a countable noun referring to a particular payment that one receives to their standard pay. The compensation usually comes as a reward for hard work or accomplishment.

For example: “She did such an amazing job with the project that the boss decided to award her a hefty bonus.”

In addition, a bonus also refers to a thing one gets, usually without expecting it. For example: “We hope we will make it to the quarter-final. Anything higher would present a big bonus for us.”

Boiler: a countable noun that describes an electric device used for heating and hot water. A boiler can run on gas, oil, coal, or electricity.

Boilers typically provide central heating in buildings.

Bounty: as a variable noun, a bounty means an abundance of something. Having a bounty of things means having plenty of them.

For example: “They enjoyed the bounty of spring flowers around their house.”

As a countable noun, a bounty refers to a sum of money rewarded for something, usually to find or even kill someone. For example: “The state put a bounty on his head.”
